Thank you for visiting our website. Both of us have always considered doing some voluntary work abroad and when the opportunity to join Camps International Cambodia Expedition came up, we decided to go!
We are now back from Cambodia and I have visited some of the rural clinics near Siem Reap and put some of my skills as a Diabetes Nurse and Travel Health Specialist Nurse into practice, and Robert as a retired Civil Engineer has been able to use his skills helping with some of the community projects. This was a challenging experience for both of us, carrying out this type of work in a tropical climate and within an impoverished community. It was an amazing trip, where we worked with a great team. I have posted some pictures in my blog, thanks to everyone who sponsored my swim. The money raised will buy medication, education packs for some of the schools and towards a HbA1c machine for the Diabetic Clinic. Please visit the CDA website on the next page, and any donations however small will be very much appreciated. |
Cambodia Healthcare Outreach Programme
In Cambodia, 40% of the population are living under the national poverty line with the figure to 90% in rural areas where, despite being rich in resources, years of war, political instability and little funds for infrastructure have left the country one of the poorest in the world with access to proper sanitation, clean drinking water and healthcare limited or nonexistent. The country’s past has left an unbalanced population with 50% under the age of 22 years of age and most people live in rural areas. Based from Camp Cambodia’s first camp in the village of Beng Mealea, this trip gives those in the medical profession, dentists and optometrists a chance to experience caring for people in a new and challenging environment. Camp Cambodia has been working on various projects within Beng Mealea over the past two years, including reconstructing and refurbishing school classrooms, community facilities and water infrastructure projects. This programme will provide vital support in improving healthcare standards in this area.
